Ben Swift

Ben Swift

Team INEOS, Professional Cyclist
Current British National Road Race Champion

Ben Swift. British Champion. What does that mean? It means thousands of hours on the bike. It means talent. It means resilience. It means overcoming adversity. It means going out to train when you really don’t want to. And, of course, it means coffee. We’re proud to have Ben Swift onboard as our first Grand Tour Coffee Company ambassador. With 14 professional wins to his name, two podium finishes at the legendary Milan-San Remo, and a reputation as one of the most professional riders in the bunch, nobody in the world of professional cycling has a bad word to say about ‘Swifty’. Not bad for a lad from Yorkshire.

Having enjoyed a 20-year professional career that spanned world titles on the track, national titles on the road and a whole host of top level teams, we’re now proud to call Russ a Grand Tour Coffee Co ambassador as he embarks on a new journey in retirement. Having enjoyed thousands of coffees ahead of thousands of races all round the globe, Russ knows his way around a good old fashioned brew. He’ll be using his experience to help us blend the perfect brew for every cyclist out there.

Free Cycling Safety App
https://www.k-safe.com

Busby is a free cycling safety app that rewards cyclists for being safe and offers unique features such as incident detection, incident prevention and easy to use near-miss reporting. If a user is involved in an incident, Busby gives them 30 seconds to move or respond. If there is no response their location is sent to emergency contacts (and in the future services) so help can arrive quicker than ever before.

Team Busby have partnered with What3Words and St John Ambulance, so if an incident occurs the user's location is sent using What3Words which gives an exact 3m x 3m location. If the user is still conscious, they will also see the SJA 10 safety steps to ensure they are in the safest possible place whilst help is on the way.

Busby has now been launched for 3 months, has users in over 24 countries, 6 continents and saved 3 lives already. Which is priceless.

Dean and Russ Downing working within the cycling industry…….

Both Dean and Russ started racing at a young age, 8 to be precise. Dad Ken was always a racer, he still rides his bike for fitness today. Further down the family tree was Grandad Cyril and his brothers who toured around the U.K. Watching the track racing on the open air tracks in the 50's and 60's.
You could say cycling is in the Downing blood line.
Between them the Downing Brothers have won quite a few races since the age of 8. 15 British Champions Jerseys between them both, 1 of those championships being together in the Madison championship back in 2003. This was the start of a successful Professional racing career for both of them on the road and track. Representing Great Britain several times at World Championships on the road and track.
Russ is one of only a handful of riders to win British Championships at all levels, school boy U16, Junior U18, Senior Elite and Professional and across all disciplines on road and track. The only one missing is the Time Trial, but both Russ and Dean for that matter have never been that good at TT's. Although Dean has a 19 minute 10 mile TT to his name and Russ has won Team Time Trials with Team Sky.
So you could say that they are very good all rounders.
We could go on forever with a history of the Downing Brothers but we won't.
Basically the 2 brothers grew up in a small mining village called Thurcroft in South Yorkshire, England, got into cycling via the family and have raced around the world ever since.

Over the last 5 years Dean has coached lots of different riders, male, female, sportive and pro riders. He's worked with 2 x Junior World Cyclo Cross Champion Ben Tulett and 2 x British Champion Alice Barnes but working with a cross section of riders and seeing them all progress each week and each month is key for him. As a coach Dean see’s great value in contact with his riders, phone calls, WhatsApp messages and Training Peaks comments with no emailing means I have a personal relationship with all his riders.. They all have separate training plans based around what time they have to work with, but also all work hard in their own ways..

In 2019 Russ started working as a mentor with some of the young lads that Dean coaches for their upcoming races.
Russ has raced all over the world but has lived and raced in France. Italy and Belgium and ridden the semi pro races in those countries as well as the big ones like Flanders, Roubaix and of course the Giro. What better mentor to have on the end of the phone to ask questions to about the races coming up… Moving forward in 2020 they have taken on a new coach in the DC brand with Tom Stewart, who is still racing in the pro ranks but learning the coaching ropes and is working with junior riders which will add yet more experience and knowledge to the team.

Why Grand Tour Coffee as partner ….

Coffee is intrinsic with cycling and we wanted to have an extra tool to provide brand awareness and a something to gift and sell to clients and people engaging with our coaching business. We have worked with Ben over the years on different cycling teams so we knew Grand Tour Coffee Co would deliver a great package for Downing Cycling. Using Grand Tour Coffee Co.’s “Brand and Brew” service we created our own brew…. Ben listened to what branding we wanted, which blend we preferred and the end product is just awesome, in taste, look and feel. Our Double Day coffee blend, which is a nod to the Double Training Days that Russ has done so many of over the years, really fits perfectly with our ethos at Downing Cycling and the coached riders love it and so do we. It certainly keeps us going through the day when analysing all the training data from our riders…

Matt Bottrill

Performance Coaching
https://www.mattbottrillperformancecoaching.com/

I started cycling at the age of 12 with CTC which gave me a love of bike riding. From there I went to Coalville Wheelers where I won National Junior 10 and Junior British Best All-Rounder. This led to a contract with North Wirral Velo which was one of the best teams at the time. After a number of wins including the Eddie Soens and National Under 23 road race series I received an offer from the World Class Performance Programme to ride for the Great Britain National Squad riding the world champs and many stage races abroad.

At this stage I thought I was on the road to starting my career as a professional bike rider, but I developed over-training syndrome. Unfortunately, we were pushed into races without proper training and the foundations needed for stage racing. Obviously this would not happen today; the science behind training and nutrition has developed dramatically since then.

I had to make the hard decision to pull myself out of that and have 5 months off my bike completely. This was quite a dark time for me as I had lost the love of cycling and needed some time out to see what I wanted to do. During this break I actually let my hair down and started going out more with my friends and this is when I first met my wife Kate - so everything happens for a reason!

After the badly-needed break, I returned to training and received an offer from a team in France called Nantes 44. This was all road-based and I really enjoyed my time there pulling off a number of victories including winning a stage in the Girvan 3-day stage race (a premier calendar). The highlight of this was taking the leader’s yellow jersey from Mark Cavendish. I remained road racing until 2008.

In May 2008 my first child, Isla was born. I had a full-time job, as a postman, and wanted to be a hands-on dad so I decided that I would focus on time trialling, as it was less time- consuming. I was soon winning lots of races but when it came to Nationals I was placing 3rd & 4th, with headlines reading “Always the bridesmaid never the bride”. My turning point came in 2010 when I was placed 3rd in the National 25 but I was well beaten and could see riders behind me were closing the gap. I knew I needed to look into different methods of training and aerodynamics and I came into contact with Bob Tobin from Cycle Power Meters. He introduced me to training with power, how to set goals and break everything down so I could reach my dream of becoming National Champion.

After meeting Bob, I was introduced to Simon Smart from Drag2zero and I knew I could get more out of myself through pushing myself, training harder, improving aerodynamics and believing in myself.

There aren’t many time trails I’ve not won in the UK, but the highlights for me are achieving the competition records: fastest time ever ridden in the UK 1:34:43 for 50 miles, 45:43 for 25 miles 2nd fastest ever 10-mile time 17:40. Winning every National Championship 10,25,50,100, circuit series, the Ron Kitching trophy and also a big highlight would be winning the prestigious Bidlake award for my cycling achievements. The list carries on with over 60 National medals and 500 races wins. The final highlight is having represented Great Britain Cycling team on over 30 occasions.

In 2014 after passing my coaching qualification, Matt Bottrill Performance Coaching was opened and I was able to use all of my racing experience and knowledge gained within the industry to pass onto others and see riders reach their goals.

I work with a whole range of amateur and professional athletes in Time Trial to Ironman for the bike leg. To name but a few, Brian Fogarty, Victoria Kenny and Ian Dempsey to Pro athletes, including Tim Don, Tim O’Donnell, Adam Bowden , Matthew Hanson, Justin Metzler, Tom Davies and previously worked with Lucy Charles, Rachel Joyce and Susie Cheetham amongst others.

I am also extremely proud to have my own team, Team Bottrill which any of our coached athletes can be part of. We have all ages and abilities within the team which makes me so proud to see. Its important to me that people feel part of what we do. Over the last few years the team have achieved many titles including individual, team medals and records in National Championships and many PB’s.

Over the last couple of years I have developed MBPC bike fitting where I have been able to use my knowledge from my racing over the years and in aerodynamics to create our in-depth approach to fitting. I was a key advisor to Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Soudal), ahead of his successful Hour Record attempt in 2019. Now working with with the whole Lotto Soudal team on bike fitting and time trial specific pacing strategies. This is something I’ve loved being apart of.

It's fair to say I’ve been there and got the tee-shirt. There’s lots of success but also lots of failures, but it’s learning from these mistakes that has made us the company we are today. That is why we can help you achieve your goals. We don’t just offer coaching - we offer the whole package of custom coaching and that’s why every rider we work with will #Smashitup.

There is no magic wand. You will have to suffer but with the support around you from a dedicated team you WILL achieve your goals. Coaching has never been just a job to me. It is my passion to see others succeed. Failure is not an option.
